New York Jan. 29th 1825
My Dear brother
I came to acknowledge the
receipt of three letters since your brother
Birth: 1793-08-23 Death: 1841-02-24

left home for the Country Dated Jan 12th 21st 25th
It is now 11 days since he left me he has gone
on business for Mr Steward
Birth: 1777-04-04 Death: 1854-12-19
to , Philips-
burgh
and Tuttletown

he will be absent four or
five days longer; should he stay any more
than the days set I am sure, yes verily I am
certain that he will find his wife insane on
his return — O that cruel, cruel Steward to be the
destroyer of my happiness for two long weeks
It is true I am happy in haveing the society of
My Mother
Birth: 1756-02-16 Death: 1830-12-22
and children
x Birth: 1821  Death: 1825-04-08  Birth: 1820-05-18  Death: 1889-05-08
who are exceedingly
dear to me, but there is no mortal, nor mortals
that can make up for the absence of my Jennings
As I know little of the Library (except that the President
Birth: 1773-06-25 Death: 1866-01-25

has collected 700 dollars) and less of the Law business I
Page 2

will leave those letters for my better half to
answer and attend to that concerning sister Frances
Birth: 1805-09-24 Death: 1865-06-21

I should regret your loss very much were it not
that I trust your happiness will be prolonged
by what I should term a misfortune did you not
tell me Henry when we were on our way to Goshen
that you sincerely believed that children would
make you miserable – You are now safe, and re-
remember that it depends entirely upon your
own dear self whether you shall be happy or wretche
Take heed to your ways; and lay no charge to your wife
My Dear Frances I am sorry to hear of your ill-
ness, but rejoice that you are so comfortable
keep good courage my dear this is but a faint
emblem of what a married life will produce – I
fear for your constitution, you are but delicate
and such hopes are exceedingly destructive – Henry
certainly ought to have taken better care of you
Pollydore
