Union College, July 22. 1828
Sir,
The sum of $300 has been collected and
placed in our hands for the erection of a monument to the
memory of Mr. David Berdan
Society. But the committee finding it impossible to transact
this business without the admittance of an agent in New York, by
the advice of your brother, take this opportunity to request you
to perform this office, in behalf for them, and they are the
more induced to do this, in as much as there are many
residing in the city who must, from a personal acquaintance
with Mr. Berdan, feel much more interest on this subject,
than we, who never knew him, can be expected to possess.
On these considerations we trust that you will willingly
undertake to serve us with your taste and judgement in the
selection and purchase of such a monument as can be
purchased with the sum collected, dedicating the expences
of transportation and erection.
Yours with esteem,
Samuel L. Lamberson
