Bargain Town 28th Feby–
my dearest Brother
Your letters of the 13th have been recd
and as you anticipate have given us sincere regret.
I think you must have mistaken Mahlons
Name: Mahlon Canfield
Birth: 1798-11-26
Death: 1865-01-05
fmeaning, he
says he did not make any personal attack – suffice for
me to say I knew his sentiments of the party and feeling
unable to convince him of his mistake (as I believed it) I was
fawilling when he show'd me his letter to give you an oppor-
tunity of defending yourself & cause, and as I believe a
righteous oone tho' I feared the consequences. I cannot for one
moment believe that my Husband can suspect my Brother kind
and tender as you have ever been of such mean mercenary
princeples – he would have answered you today but some un-
pleasant circumstance has occured in his practice which
makes him unhappy & beside he is away now.
I am grieved that it will not be in my power to avail my-
self of your kind offer to visit your home, dearest Henry
I feel under a thousand & ten thousand obligations for your
kindness and will never cease to remember it, but it is quite
impossible for me to leave home this spring.
The Coll' Office requires one of us here all the time. Mahlons
practice calls him away and there is no person here whom
we could make answer the purpose of Depy – beside this it is
a hard matter to make ourselves content when we are here
and when I am away Mahlon is so lonely tho' he will never
make this any excuse, still I know it is a sore trial for him
to have me go away
[left Margin] write us often, it does me so much good to hear from you.

Mahlons sucess in getting the Colls office has been a
serious injury to his professional usefulness, it has caused
much disaffection among the people, and it is every day
subjecting us to the most disagreeable circumstance of seeing

& have no more sense of gratitude than
so many horses & to be insulted by them is more than I can
bear. I wish Mahlon to go off but he does thanot know of any
situation likely to answer his expectations.
I did not mean to tell you one word of this but I feel it
is some relief to my wounded feelings to make them known
to you ever sympathizing & kind – but do not let it [ affict ]
