I have written you this day in behalf of the Trustees upon the subject
of the Village Corporation. The Patriot is still this week about your speech
they may not assail it but Goodwin has said he intended to do so as
I understand — If Throop will appoint Keeler & Clute e auction-
eers for god sake let him, he can invent no act more unpop-
ular, I have asked some of the Jackson men today whether Clute
was to be auctioneer and they will not believe I am serious
Tom Wood is drunk again and cannot live much longer he
seems determined to die, he will sell his books at about 40
percent discount but there are among his books, many which
are not worth buying with $300 I presume a better library can
be bought his library is an excellent one and he will sell
it at 5 years credit. if about $100 worth of his books could be
stricken out it would be a good purchase, his he will not
sell Cowen & Wendel separate — and he tells me Cowens Reports
belong to Seneca. I am of abou opinion that with Cowens
Digest I could get along without the Reports and I think
I can raise $30. in the Court of the summons to buy Wendells
Reports — Tom has handed me over his business and wants
me to come back to his office. I would not have left him
had it not been for my Justice business which was good for
nothing there. about It will be worth here where I am more
than the business of his office and I shall get more law
business than I probably should there, I have perhaps
as many books as I can read to advantage yet in order to be
familiar with the late decisions and new practices I
should be glad to have access to the latest reports —
As to Georges Bank I hear but little said
about it it will create a blow up if chartered and if it
can be defeated in the house I should not care I signed

petition for the Bank. Everybody was signing it when I did
so I did not expect, it would pass and I presume all
thought so. It is now believed that it will not pass.
