March 12. 1832
Dear S.
Enclosed is a Petition of some few of those signing the petition remonstrating against the pas-
sage of the law to amend the act of incorporation for this Village
I understand the law as repo erted Confers upon the Trustees
the power of granting licences in the manner heretofore practiced in this Village.
If this is the reading of the law it is different from what I supposed and have
represented— I wish you would alter the second section of the law so as to read
"The said Trustees shall be exclusively authorized to grant licences
"in the manner presented in the Revised Statutes . And not otherwise, to so "many tavern Keepers and Grocers as they shall deem proper ^within the limits of said Village^
and to
"deman determine the sum to be paid for such licenses. and to demand
"and receive from the persons obtaining such licenses a a bond with the
"like penalty and security as is required and authorized by the revised Statutes
"and to pay over the money ^received for such licences^ in the manner presented thereby for the w into
"the County treasury in the manner and within the time therein presented
"and ^said board of Trustees shall^ be governd in all things relating to the granting of any such licences
"by the ^provisions of^ manner described by the Revised Statutes —
Strike out of the first section the word "or Drank" and also
the word "liquors" in the same section —
Also alter to ^alter^ Section 6. so as it shall read "Neither
"the said Trustees nor the board of Excise of the Town of Auburn after
"the passing of this law shall have any power to grant any licence
"to any Grocer for the sale of any strong and spirituous liquors
"to be drank in said Grocery"
When your letter was received in relation to this
bill I altered the draft returned by me so that the second section
read in substance as above and have so represented and
so have the trustees also represented that the bill was so alter-
ed by you. I supposed from your letter that such was the alter-
ation you have made— and if it is not so substantially
I as well as the Trustees shall be loath to censure for a misrep-
resentation— I have written Mr Mather
Birth: 1796-02-13 Death: 1868-07-11
about the bill
and really hope the provisions contained in that bill will
not be lost on account of the section about groceries —
I wish you would have the bill altered or amen-
ded so as to read substantially as I have desired above.
you will perceive from my representation that I as well
as the trustees will be subject to censure if the bill does
not conform substantially with our representations made to the
citizens of this Village.
Your servant
W
Please send me a copy of the bill as soon as it is ordered
to action or reading.
