The result of the Town Election in Auburn will not surprise you
It was not to be expected that any mortal man could be elected on our ticket and
as the result has proved, the lines of party are drawn so tight that but little variance
can be looked for let who will be the candidate. The vote stood as follows
for Supervisor. Throop 382
Seward 313
Majority for Throop .69
For Town Clerk- Benedict-- 398
Cumpston-- 309

you will see that Throop is altogether behind his ticket and that you
are ahead of your own, Throop was stricken off of many votes.
I do not apprehend that much will be said about Georges
Triumph, his unpopularity with his own party is so apparent
from the vote, the Clay folks went against us — the political
complexion of the several towns in this County as appears from the
probable result of the town meeting is as follows

The votes are about the same as last fall altho
we have a gain in Sempronius & Mentz & Fleming — the
result is no indication of the strength of the parties.. all
parties admitting before election that the res p several
Towns would elect officers of the same political cast
as the result has proved, — a few votes either more or

for or against us does not afford a any evidence of a
change of parties — the Clay folks as usual went against
us in Brutus the Nationals ran a ticket & got 14 votes.
The Convention ^of Nationals^ takes place on the 12^th it is to be hoped for
the credit of the very few that fight under Bronsons
flag that it will squish out. B. & his Clay friends
have aided in keeping up the ascendancy of the family
in Cayuga and will persist in their endeavors to do so.
I endeavored to prevent your nomination for
Supervisor but it was useless a species of madness had got
possession of your friends and they would have it so—
It was a most ridiculous business on their part but as it
was generally known that your friends opposed it then
can nothing unpleasant attach to you in conse-
quence, the Judge was opposed to it—
I fear the Spirit of Masonry will not sub-
Mit. think of Bronson and then imagine if a party
ruled by such men can expect to be ruled by reason
or prudence—I have written you 2 long letters
on the subject of politics full of bodings & forbodings
but have not yet thought but to send them. I fear
your anticipations in regard to Root factions will
not be realised — he gave the workers more reason to
expect he would stand his hand than he has
given you — have you ever thought what would
have been the condition of New York politics had
the Old Delaware stood the Salina Contrivance
I have had to deal with the faction before you
they cannot hate - for they do not nor have they ever
lend each other the same motives which caused
the combination will continue to preserve it like the
Chaos of Corrupt Elements! The more discordant the
firmer the Unity— A bond stronger than that of
brotherhood —a bond of guilt unites them, they
can never be divided they should never be divided
let them all sink together.
