My Dear Henry Florida 23rd. Feb 1833
Our frost Mails are very irregular. I [ ]

of the 20th last evening by the hand of sidney Evans
placed the circumstance of my successor before my
friends upon this [ gounds ]
Alternate Text: grounds first that I wished as far as
respected myself to decline altogether, second that the kind
able & friendly support I have recieved from the Citizens
of the county lays me under obligation not to forsake
them and thirdly that I think now is the time to
conclude what course they will take in this matter.
Their representation to me is that the Court Bar
and respectable inhabitants of the County are desireous
for me to continue. That they have no other person
in view and think of no other. At the same time
knowing the feelings of Westcott
men they are sensible it is a delicate subject
to approach[ . ]
Reason: I have asked nothing but to be
permited to retire. If therefore my appoint-
ment is further advocated it must be by the
inhabitants of the County. How far they will
be disposed to act I know not, but in one thing
I have the gratification to say I cannot be mistaken
that whatever the event may be I have the feeling
& good wishes fo the people with me. You and
Mr Van Duzer
able to Judge of the proper course to pursue.
And with you I leave it with one single
remark that I have endeavored to prossicute
my official duties for the best interest of the
Country and hope never to be unmindfull
of the able support I have recieved for so great
a period in the performance of those duties[ . ]

Please to communicate this to Mr Van Duzer
ask him to write and let me know the
result of this affair as soon as possible.
