Wednesday morning 28th
My Dearest Sister,
I have spent a miserable, restless
night thinking of you and reproaching myself for not
trying to persuade
Until I saw you I had no conception how ill you
were and then all was hurry and confusion and it
was not until you actually drove from the door
that I realized the danger to which you were exposing
yourself. The intense coldness of the weather this morning
has not tended in any measure to allay my fears.
If you suffer from this exposure as I too surely believe
you will I shall never forgive myself for not
going over to Mrs. Chase's
case more perfectly. If this does not kill you do
let me beseech you, for my sake , be very careful
of yourself – diseased as you are a slight cause
by aggrevating your complaints or giving them a new
direction may prove fatal. I hope to hear something
from you tomorrow but hardly dare hope that it
will be any thing favorable. If you are spared
to us until spring I will never agin consent
to be separated from you until you are in
better health. My love to Frances
will write her a letter when she is happier than
she can be now. Do tell me just how you are
and remember that any disguise on this subject
is cruelty rather than kindness. Your own sister
