Westfield Feb. 10. 1838
Dear Henry
Supposing you to be on
your way here, it seems almost
superfluous to write. Possibly not
& I will drop you a few lines to
Auburn.
We are engaged as usual in
vending a little land & receiving a
little interest & renewing a few
articles—and more than all, we
are applying our time to the statement.
I hope this effort will be accomplished
by the time you mentioned (20th inst)
A trifle of land will now &
then sell—and as often a little over
Lewis'

prices as it is rejected at
them. — Many are paying interest
& many are struggling who have
as yet been unable to make it up.

What proportions have paid I have
not had time to examine: I think
however they are paying as well as
you expected & better than I supposed.
— In relation to articles I find many
of them entirely safe to turn into
Bonds & Mortgages (as I apprehend) &
accordingly we are renewing in that
shape— others we are requiring a
few dollars on & granting a renewal.
I may mention here, what was
communicated to you at N.Y. but
perhaps not received: That I had
drawn on the U.S. Bank for the
$2.124 91/100 in favour of Van Hall
Birth: 1799-12-23
before
the receipt of your letter informing me
that you had realized a part of it. —
I made an effort at once to counter-
mand my draft, but Mr VanderKemp
Birth: 1783-04-22 Death: 1855-12-04

had obtained the sum before the letter
reached him.
I mentioned also that both Mr
Falconer
Birth: 1780-12-22 Death: 1851-10-20
& Mr Lowry
Birth: 1805-10-22 Death: 1852-02-23
informed me

that the funds to meet their $4232
(due 11 Jan) was actually in the US at
the time. At Mr Falconers request
I forwarded the draft again & hope
still it will be met.
Lowry has placed in my
hands about $3.200 to meet this
& other such drafts.
I am daily looking
for Mr Falconer here — but
what his errand may be
I have no intimation.
Lowry makes no offers of com-
promise with the Lumbermans — Irving
Birth: 1792-12-15 Death: 1868-08-24

I think I mentioned has settled
upon the terms of payment for
his $110.000 — (Lowry owes $80.000)
We sold a farm of 69 ac. at

in Sheridan:— it seemed unavoidable.

atty: —
Court sits with us next week
& much business it is said will come on.

We have been handed the funds you
suggested for paying taxes — & the tax
lists are coming in. They will be less
I immagine than you supposed.
Mr Rumsey
Birth: 1785-06-01 Death: 1873-07-31
seems very anxious to see you.
The sleighing is fine & our ladies are
looking for sister Fanny
Birth: 1805-09-24 Death: 1865-06-21
& we shall
all be glad to see you both.
Your Grateful Brother
