Friday morning–
Augustus
Birth: 1826-10-01 Death: 1876-09-11
left us this morning – after what I regret was a cheerless
visit. Frances
Birth: 1805-09-24 Death: 1865-06-21
has been unable to sit up an hour since he came.
Aunt Clara
Birth: 1793-05-01 Death: 1862-09-05
is abroad. Augustus at school – and I entirely
absorbed in the perplexities and labors of the day.
Your letter of the 22d came last evening. [ Thee ]

Alternate Text

Alternate Text: There
is nothing
new. My answer to the Abolitionists has gone. It will
probably be unsatisfactory to the ultraists on both sides.
The confidence of our friends is recovering itself rapidly
and that of our opponents is sinking. I know the Whig
party was never so well organized. But I am compelled
to admit that the organization of our opponents is more
complete and their zeal greater than I have believed.
On the whole it is my private opinion that there can
be no safe calculation upon the result. My hopes exceed
my apprehensions. The Resolutions in Chautauqua Co. Conven-
tion were admirable – and came just in time. They
will put to flight all solicitude throughout the state.
The "express wins golden opinions from all sorts of men."
Yours [ faithfuly ]
