Tuesday morning, 6 Nov.
Dr. H. – Expecting the mail this morning, I had
intended to mention, by it, that the 1st day in this
town & Portland
Name: City: Portland
County: Chautauqua County
State: NY
Country: US
have done better than we expected, a
little. On the hill back of us, where usually there are
50 & 60 votes polled, there were 90 polled yesterday & where
there is usually 25 & 30 Loco majority, Whigs this year
have a majority of 6 or 8. I hope & trust it may be
so close here through the county – but as yet do not hear.
The Printer here begged off from printing our blank deeds
and mortgages till after election – which I was the more
willing to grant because the selection of agent had not
been made. If now, it is certain that your name may
be inserted pray inform me and I will have the deeds
&c printed without delay.
In regard to the failure in getting our deeds
home from Van Hall
Name: Peter Van Hall
Birth: 1799-12-23
Death:
, it is a curious fact that
the tory junto at Mayville

never found

out. Now
& then there has been a call here in the office which
alarmed us – but I could never hear that the fail-
ure was alluded to out of the office & nothing
has been said by the prints or by the politicians
of the county. Van Hall had previously sent
home some of those unsigned – Augustus
Name: William Sackett
Birth: 1811-11-18
Death: 1895-09-06Certainty: Probable
took
them on. Van Hall has written his consent to
sign them & I am looking for them every stage –
in fact I expected them at Buffalo

County:

to bring home
with me.

heard of the results of two days from 8 the results
of the first day – all looks well our friends were never
half so sure of 2000 as they are now.

write it. I am not sure however that some of his slanders are not actionable.
