Auburn 23 March 1839
Dear Henry
After a tedious night ride of (18
hours from Utica
Name: City: Utica
County: Oneida County
State: NY
Country: US
to Syracuse
Name: City: Syracuse
County: Onandaga County
State: NY
Country: US
) I reached here
yesterday at 2 OCl’k. All well. The Judge
Name: Elijah Miller
Birth: 1772-04-11
Death: 1851-11-13
tells me he had a lame toe, one day, after his
return – but he looks as well and appears as
cheerful as I have seen him in years.
Aunt Clara
Name: Clarinda McClallen
Birth: 1794
Death: 1862-09-05
, always kind, received me with
much kindness – cordiality & did every thing
to make my stay agreeable.
Jones
as he can - but says he is out of business & on
expenses, till he gets title in Chautauque
Name: Chautauqua, NY City: Chautauqua
County:
State: NY
Country: US
& hopes
you will let him off prety soon. Cook
somewhat suffice submissively, also – but shows
anxiety to have his business adjusted. As yet
I have not seen Underwood
Name: Jonas Underwood
Birth: 1797-03-07
Death: 1864-01-05
. Have sent him
word that I am here – possibly he may come
in – and if any thing occurs requiring it, I
will communicate.
Cobb
Name: Rowland Cobb
Birth: 1802-07-02
Death: 1884-03-05
, feels fine. His rejection roused him
& in a few hours, he had his handbills out
for an indignation meeting here, high as a liberty
pole – but the news of his appointment on the canal
made it necessary for him to deny any hand
in the call of the meeting & to wonder who it
was that called it. He is vastly better
Page 2
pleased with the latter than the former nom-
ination. Nothing could have suited him
better.
Judge Conklin
Name: Alfred Conkling
Birth: 1789-10-12
Death: 1874-02-05
received me kindly
& seems willing to do any thing for you.
I have yet not as yet seen Garrow
Name: Nathaniel Garrow
Birth: 1780-04-25
Death: 1841-03-03
.
I expect to leave today on the arrival
of the R.R. line – after visiting Rochester
Name: City: Rochester
County: Monroe County
State: NY
Country: US
& Batavia

, I will again drop you a line.
Your Grateful Brother
B.J. Seward
Underwood has come in Understanding
from him that he drew nothing from the
Land Office, when in Westifeld
Name: City: Westfield
County: Chautauqua County
State: NY
Country: US
, I have
advanced him six hundred dollars, on
his contract with you, to pay a portion of
the incumbrances mentioned in it to be
paid by the first of May April – such
advance being by Chk in The Chautauque
Co Bank. He speaks of further advances
being necessary to him by the month
of May (about a thousand dollars) but
I have referred him to you – and he
expects to see you the 3d or 5 of April
in Albany on his way to Massachusetts
Name: Massachusetts City:
County:
State: MA
Country: US
He is expecting to move out in May
also Jones - & others – indeed there is a good
deal of Chautauque fever here and I
Page 3
am thinking there may be many settlers
& some capital sent out from here. This
may the less interest you since you have
so nearly sold out - but it will be good
for Cary
Name: Trumbull Cary
Birth: 1786-08-11
Death: 1869-06-20
& others.
Mr Garrow speaks most kindly in
regard to the Chautauque appointment.
I am anxiously waiting the arrival
of the stage.
Yours as ever
