Chautauque Land Office
Westfield 2 May 1839
Dear H.
You have herein a list of the
lands advertised by the Comptroller
Birth: 1790-11-28 Death: 1793-11-24
to be sold
May 27. for Taxes, so far as I can ascer-
tain, that this office has an interest in them.
The advertisement says the taxes were levied
in either 1831, 2, 3, 4, or 5, but does not tell
which. In cases where the new Company
have given full deeds, since the levy, I
suppose, we are to pay the tax & defend the
title. In cases where the old Co gave
deeds subsequently to the levy, they in like
manner are responsible: but whether your
Agency for them, requires you to notice it
or otherwise, you will judge. In cases
also, where the levy is subsequent to the
sale by the new Co, if the land is not paid
for & likely to come back upon foreclosure
there would seem to be no advantage in
allowing them to be sold for taxes. I
write you, because several persons have
written me, requesting me to pay the
tax & save their farms according to
the warranty in their deeds. The table
is sent you, that you may have the whole
case before you.
Yours
B. J. Seward
