My very dear Uncle,
The suspense, which we have all been
in, concerning the state of your dear Son Augustus

, & the
confidence which we have felt that every mail would
bring us more certain news respecting the issue of his illness
have caused me to defer thus long writing to you.
I cannot, of course, realize the depth of a Father’s
solicitude, yet I can and do really sympathize with you
in view of his extreme sickness, while, at the same time,
I am unable to relinquish the hope that our fears
concerning him are not to be realized; may our Heavenly
Father grant that he may yet be restored to health,-
or, if it be otherwise ordained, that you may have grace from
on high cheerfully to abide the dispensations of a kind &
infinitely wise Providence.
The sympathies which you express, in letters
to my Grand Parents

afflicted call forth my gratitude. Difficult as it is
to kiss the rod which smites” I desire to murmur not –
I would that I had not been called to drink this bitter
cup, yet I desire not to be made submissive to my
Heavenly Father’s will.
