My dear Henry
Your kind letter from West Point was promptly

ing it gave me pleasure to learn that you spent
your time agreeably while in the City – That

was interest in your misfortune and
would render you every attention he could
I approve also of the arrangement you have
made for Augustus
Birth: 1820-05-18 Death: 1889-05-08
to go on to and remain
at the Land Office untill your Executive affairs
will permit you to repaire to Chatauqua in
person – By defering such part of this business as
they are not capable of transacting and
attending strictly to the rest it will give you
time to procure an honest faithfull and
competent agent to close up the remainder
of that concern to the satisfaction of all concerned
It has created much anxiety in my mind
since the decease of your beloved brother
Birth: 1793-08-23 Death: 1841-02-24

But I still feel it my duty to press it on
you not to suffer your Executive concerns
to be neglected on account of minor business
It is a well known fact that on you rests
the success of the Whig party in the state of
New York – and on the state of New York
Page 2

Rests the Whig cause in the Union
Let N Y fall back into low favoure and the
general government is at once distracted
and lost – she could not sustain her ascending
two years – Besides your personal reputation
is deeply involved in this question – The im-
portant point is to be desided whether when
you have gained a splendid victory you
are capable of sustaining your out posts and
thus making perminent the glorious victory
you have won – This is not all you have a pro-
mising family coming on the stage and
their success in life depends very much on the
manner in which you sustain your self for
the next four years – Permit me my dear child
to make one observation on that all important
article your health and vigor to endure
business – It seems to me you are not exact & firm
enough in the arrangement of your business hours
It should Never be expected when you have pres-
sing business for 20 days you will do it in five
Support your high character adapt your business
hours & hours of relaxation and sleep and thus
Envigorat[ e ]

carrying out those weighty and vastly important
objects to the people of this State which have
devolved on you

Will you write a line to Mr Granger

and
ask him – If an application for P. M. in this
your native village should be presented to
defer the appointment untill he hears from
you – I am still of the opinion that Dr. A.

would meet the approbation of the County
better than any man named – The four
Court houses and Jails we hope will end in
two Jails for the present – The Locos have
again started we hope and expect they will
not succeed —
We are very anxious to hear how your
hand and health is – will you please to
