Westfield 4 May 1841
My dear Uncle,
I have this morning received a letter from
Henry Starr Esq
Birth: 1781-03 Death: 1851-08-30
of Cincinnati, in answer to one from me
but shortly after my arrival here
From his letter I make this extract:
“I have delayed in writing you because I have expected to hear from
his administrator. You do not inform me that you are the admin-
istrator or executor. However it is not important.
The House & lot in which your family lived when in this city
belonged to your father
Birth: 1793-08-23 Death: 1841-02-24
at the time of his death. The legal
title is in myself. He held my Bond to make him a Deed
with full currants (is that the word!) as to the title, which I
am ready to execute to his heirs at any time, and the sooner
it is done perhaps the better. Should I declare before making
a title it might be attended with some embarrassment.
If you desire it and will give me the names of the heirs I
will make a Deed to them, have it recorded and send it to you:
on receiving it you can enclose to me my Bond. I will take
care of the property for you, rent it out & remit
To relax as intensity; to make less tense or violent • To forgive; to surrender the right of punishing a crime • To pardon, as a fault or crime • To give up; to resign • To send back • To transmit money, bills, or other things in payment for goods • To restore • To slacken • To abate in violence for a time •

rents. There is now in possession a good tenant at the
rate of $ 250. a year. He has been in possession since Dec’r. The
former tenant ran away leaving $87.50/100 by way of rent unpaid.
It is a part of my boneed to pay rent at the rate of $87.00
per quarter. I have paid to the 1 Jan’y last as you will see by my
last letter to your Father
Birth: 1768-12-05 Death: 1849-08-24
. The quarter’s rent which became
due 1st instant, I have not because I have not known who was
the administrator executor of your Father. When I made the
Bond I then rented the House & let at that rate. I pay more
than I get. If you think with me we had
better arrange the whole business as soon as practicable - let me
make a Deed and close the matter.”
I shall answer this letter expressing gratitude for
Mr Starr’s willingness to look after rents &c. May I not
ask you Sir, to write him?_ what if he deceases before
this Deed is made! Can the matters interests there be
in any way secured immediately?
I wrote a line to you by yesterday’s mail -
Love to all.
Very Respectfully
Your Affectionate Nephew
Augustus S.
Mr S. it seems receives $250 rent &
is bound to pay $350. : is the
property constantly depreciating in
value?
