My dear Mother
I received your letter on last
Tuesday. Summer is nearly gone the leaves
on the trees do not look as fresh as they
used too. I see that the Tariff bill passed
by only two majority. The cadets break up
camp and go into barracks next day after
tomorrow. In church this morning I saw
a General
was rather a savage looking man.
There are a great many visitors at the Point
now, as many as there has been any time
this summer I think. I can translate
French much easier than I thought I
should be able too when I commenced
we get two pages at a lesson in Telamaque
Chestnuts are nearly ripe here, butternuts
are ripe enough to eat although it

is not very pleasant eating them because
they stain your hands in cracking them.
The steamboat Albany broke down
nearly oppositie here on Thursday last
on her way down to New York, it was
the shaft on which her walking beam
turns that broke I believe they stopped
the machinery amediately so that no
other damage was done, the Swallow
towed her up to Cold Springs when
she came along to be repaired
