Auburn Oct 7th
My dear Henry,
I am much distressed
by the confirmation of my fears
that Augustus
Birth: 1826-10-01 Death: 1876-09-11
would go still
further away without coming
home– I received a letter from
him this morning dated 25 Sep–
He says his company are ordered
to Ft Towson in the Red River
100 miles beyond the Arkansas
line– This will carry him
some 4 or 500 miles beyond
the Mississippi River–
I cannot, so long as there is a
possibility of my seeing him feel
reconciled to his leaving the
boundaries of civilization without
again seeing him– I have written
to him this morning to inquire
Page 2

if there is any possibility of my
meeting him any where on his
route– to inquire what that
route will be &c– I am well,
and with your consent could
make a long journey and endure
many privations in preference to
having my child depart
without seeing him– I have been
trying to fancy the route he
will take but cannot determine
whether he will ascend the Red
River or go up the Mississippi
to the Arkansas from there to
Little Rock– My ignorance of
the navigation of the Rivers
prevents my forming any con-
clusion– I send this letter to
Washington hoping it may meet
you there so that you may
make some enquiries at the
War Department– All well
ever your own
Frances–

Augustus said the time of
their departure from Pasacgoula
was not fixed– some of the
regiments were to leave imme-
diately for other station– North
