Auburn July 8th /49
My dear Son,
I have your letter dated the
8th of June – You seem to have received
the letter I wrote from Washington previous
to one which I wrote from here three
weeks b before about the middle of
April – but I suppose you have that
too before this time with some others –
I mentioned in that the death of Col.
Richardson
Birth: 1780-12-19 Death: 1849-04-14
Lewis
Birth: 1819 Death: 1897-03-21
has taken Mr Bemis
Birth: 1805-01-09 Death: 1878-07-11

into partnership with him – he is very
steady and I should think doing well
but his mother
Birth: 1788 Death: 1878-07-02
and sisters
x Birth: 1822  Death: 1897-08-22  Birth: 1826  Death: 1855-09-03
are entirely de-
pendent upon him – Nothing has yet
been heard from De Witt
Birth: 1824 Death: 1882-11-05
and George
Birth: 1825-07-07 Death: 1919-06-25

who sailed for California in the
Minerva – I think the route around
Cape Horn
x

seems upon the whole to be
the most sure – Those who cross the
Isthmus are detained a long time waiting
for vessels and the overland route
is unsafe both from the indians and
Cholera – many have died and
many been killed by Indians –
Page 2

Nothing has been heard from the Auburn
company since they left Independence
You say nothing of the Cholera
having reached you so I will hope
it has not – It is increasing in all
our large towns – too much caution
cannot be used in eating fruit and
green vegetables – and many might be
saved did they not neglect the disease
in the incipient stages – when it is thought
to be only diarrhea –
Your father
Birth: 1801-05-16 Death: 1872-10-10
is still in Court at Canandaigua
as soon as he gets through we are
going to Florida to see Grandpa Seward
Birth: 1768-12-05 Death: 1849-08-24

perhaps this week – I shall stay a week
but your Father cannot stay so long
having an engagement at Philadelphia
Frances Worden
Birth: 1826-12-12 Death: 1909-08-24
will go with us –
She is not quite as well as she was
The 4th of July was so quiet here
that Willie
Birth: 1839-06-18 Death: 1920-04-29
went to Canandaigua for
amusement – he came home last
night bringing with him Charly Seymour
Birth: 1839

a little boy of his own age – He
is to go back again and stay with
his Aunty
Birth: 1803-11-01 Death: 1875-10-03
while we are absent –
Fanny
Birth: 1844-12-09 Death: 1866-10-29
will go with me – She is not well yet –
Page 3

Mrs Pitney
Birth: 1801 Death: 1860-08-06
who is here from Chicago says
Fanny is no larger than when we were there
she is much taller but not so fat –
Lockwood Brown
Birth: 1825-08-23 Death: 1912-12-13
came with his Aunt
Unknown
