Auburn July 8^th /49
My dear Son,
I have your letter dated the
8^th of June – You seem to have received
the letter I wrote from Washington previous
to one which I wrote from here three
weeks b before about the middle of
April – but I suppose you have that
too before this time with some others –
I mentioned in that the death of Col.
Richardson – Lewis has taken Mr Bemis
into partnership with him – he is very
steady and I should think doing well
but his mother and sisters are entirely de-
pendent upon him – Nothing has yet
been heard from De Witt and George
who sailed for California in the
Minerva – I think the route around
Cape Horn seems upon the whole to be
the most sure – Those who cross the
Isthmus are detained a long time waiting
for vessels and the overland route
is unsafe both from the indians and
Cholera – many have died and
many been killed by Indians –

Nothing has been heard from the Auburn
company since they left Independence –
You say nothing of the Cholera
having reached you so I will hope
it has not – It is increasing in all
our large towns – too much caution
cannot be used in eating fruit and
green vegetables – and many might be
saved did they not neglect the disease
in the incipient stages – when it is thought
to be only diarrhea –
Your father is still in Court at Canandaigua
as soon as he gets through we are
going to Florida to see Grandpa Seward
perhaps this week – I shall stay a week
but your Father cannot stay so long
having an engagement at Philadelphia
Frances Worden will go with us –
She is not quite as well as she was
a month ago –
The 4^th of July was so quiet here
that Willie went to Canandaigua for
amusement – he came home last
night bringing with him Charly Seymour –
a little boy of his own age – He
is to go back again and stay with
his Aunty while we are absent –
Fanny will go with me – She is not well yet –

Mrs Pitney who is here from Chicago says
Fanny is no larger than when we were there
she is much taller but not so fat –
Lockwood Brown came with his Aunt e – has gone
to New York –
I wish you could see our garden
at this season it is very full of roses —
we have made some improvements in
the house and grounds which you
will be pleased to see when you
come home – When will that be? –
Is Capt Marcy of the 5^th who is on
an exploring expedition the Capt Marcy
of your Regiment who is stationed
at Ft Towson? – – I have had
the tooth ache for a week past
past and am not well to day which
must apologize for a dull letter –
