This letter was included with Frances Miller Seward’s letter to Augustus Henry Seward on August 5, 1849.
I am again in Auburn, My dear Cousin and
you little know how much you are needed to make
this family circle entire – it is two years this month since
you left us and how little can we tell whether we
all may meet again – but we hope and are now
looking forward to the time of your coming back
having a period of their own as to the when and
a place of their own as to what shall be done
when you do come– Grandpa Seward
Birth: 1768-12-05 Death: 1849-08-24
has despaired
of you far less having settled you upon his
farm and with the suspencion of his affairs from
occupation you will not want occupation no doubt
situation and for neighbors you will however
have your brother Fred

and I attended
commencement. Were much pleased with
the exercises of commencement day – and I
of course thought Fred spoke better
than any one else – certainly if he
did not speak better he spoke and
appeared remarkably well – considering
he was only 19 years old and did
a large audience was looking and of
course critisising him. The day ended
by a dance in the evening – Which
was very pleasant and lasted I believe
until day light – Texas like
I have written in a very little space
but you will excuse appearances I know
before I return home I will write a
respectable letter – until then believe me
your affectionate
cousin
