Saturday Aug 3rd
My dear Henry,
I have been hoping
you might come home
but your last letter gives
no encouragement– I hope
you will keep well this
warm weather– Affairs
at Washington seem to us
in a confused state– our
telegraph reports are some-
what imperfect but we
gather that the compromise
bill was virtually lost
which is cause of rejoi-
cing for the Whigs–
