Friday June 4th —
My dear Henry,
Lazette
I am alone again with the children —
Willie returned from Mc Grawville yesterday
leaving Johnny
which is in connexion with the College —
I have not yet received an answer to my
enquiries about the terms but think the
expense including board & tuition will
not exceed $25 a quarter — which is
as reasonable as can be expected — I
will send the letter to John to day —
You misdirected a letter to H. Greely
to me — I have sent it to him but have
none in exchange — I see by the papers
that he is still absent from N. York —
I am watching the proceedings of the Democratic
Convention with much interest — I should
hope they would assume the platform they
propose, were I not fearful that it would
induce the Whigs to do something equally
absurd — That is the Democratic platform

although our friend Charles Sumner
doubts it. It is honest in them to acknowled[ g ]

it — It would be dishonest in the Whigs
to pretend it was thiers — A good honest
Whig said to me the other day — “If we are
sure of electing Gen Scott
a candidate about whose Anti Slavery principles
we have no doubt” — Anti Slavery is the
moving principle here — it is a refreshing
change from the atmosphere of Washington —
Did you see our Newspaper account of Kossuth’s
reception — He commenced his reply to the
Mayor
and concluded his speech at the Church
by a quotation from your intervention speech
which was loudly applauded — I am
pleased to see that Meagher
influence of his religion & the petty spite of
his nation generally — Can he be a protestant? —
I hope not as the explanation would then be
apparent — I believe I ought not to have written
that — I merely meant I hoped there were
Catholics not devoid of Christian charity —
If Mr Sumner has returned the “Westminster” please
send it to me
