Albany August 4th 1852
My dear Father,
Frank Hall
wishes me to ask your influence to obtain
a furlough for his brother in law, Lieut.
J. N. G. Whistler
His application is before the Department at
Washington for an eight months leave, but
it seems the approval of the Colonel of
the Regiment
not been secured.
His friends have told him that
you could easily obtain what you wished
from Gen. Scott

he comes to me to ask you. I have
told him that I did not think you
could do anything more, in regard
to any military application, than to call
the attention of the proper officer (Gen. Scott
or whoever he might be) to it; but that
I would send you the facts and
ask you to do whatever you thought
consistent and proper.
I have no doubt Lieut. Whistler
deserves a furlough if any one in the
Regiment is entitled to one. He has been
four years in New Mexico, and has
performed a great part of the time,
the duties of Commissary and Quarter
Master, in addition to his own. He was

in Mexico with Gen. Scott from Vera Cruz
to the City, and was promoted there.
His wife are at
Schenectady, and he has not seen them
since he was ordered to his present
station.
