Auburn Aug 22d
My dear Henry,
I have deferred
writing for a day
or two that I might
hear how long you
would be detained in
Washington – Our mails
and Telegraph have
both failed us in con-
sequence of the heavy
rains at the East–
This morning I have
your letter of Tuesday
and will venture to
write again – I am
very sorry the
Page 2

excursion to Halifax
is abandoned I thought
it would be of use to
you – Perhaps you will
find some other recreation
you certainly need
freedom from care for
a season – Augustus
Birth: 1826-10-01 Death: 1876-09-11

came home for a day
or two last evening
as Mr Blunt
Birth: 1799-11-24 Death: 1866-09-02
is not
at Castleton he will
not be able to stay
long – he looks well.
Thomas Miller
Birth: 1817-07-09 Death: 1864-07-23
has
been here a day or
two – I have given
Willie
Birth: 1839-06-18 Death: 1920-04-29
permission to
Page 3

go home with him
for a week – Willie
does not find sufficient
occupation here to satisfy
himself – perhaps you
and he may decide
upon some course which
will give him employment
I think I have persuaded
him to wait –
Our farming operations are
not without difficulties –
The boys nearly pulled to
pieces one stack of hay
last Sunday which was
readjusted with some difficulty
before this long rain –
This morning Dennis
Birth: 1827
found
the cow at the gate of
the house – the gate of the
the pasture lot having been
removed last night –

cellar digging is
retarded by the rain
which I believe is now
over – I shall accompany
Augustus to Syracuse when
he returns – (probably Monday)
to look for gas fixtures –
the gas is ready for use –
I shall hope to hear
that you have planned
some other excursion –
All send love
your own Frances
The letter which I enclose
came last night – with
it, that which you
wrote to Mr Webb
Birth: 1802-02-08 Death: 1884-06-07
last
October –
We are just reading your speech
the proof only came a day
in advance of the Tribune
