Dear Mrs Seward,
Tomorrow I start for
Monttpelier—the South
of France, where I am
to go through a treatment
which has been laid out
for me at a consulta-
tion of distinguished medi-
cal characters. They in-
sist that I shall not
return to my public
duties this winter; & their

formal opinion has been
communicated to my
colleague
give me the cheering ass-
urance that I shall
again be a well man.
In this they were unani-
mous.
I submit for the present;
but, perhaps, you will
see me before the session
is over. But for this

Congress I should be sure of
my complete restoration.
Your pleasant letter came
to-day; accept this
simply as an acknowledgement
—written in great haste—
with good news & bad.
Nobody can tell how I
long to be again in the
houses! But for this I
must be well!
Remember me to your husband
who has probably forgotten me;
at least I have no sign

of his memory. But if he
will work well for the
cause I will release
him from all obligation
to me.
Ever sincerely yours,
Charles Sumner
