Editorial Note

Assuming that the reference to Sarah is to Sarah Hance, this letter is unlikely to have been written before 1855, when she became Fanny’s tutor, but it seems more likely this letter was written as late at 1861, when the movements of Frederick William Seward would be more newsworthy.
Tuesday evening
My Darling
I find the Western
mail closes in the
morning at 6o'clock so
I must write to night
I have been sick all
day – but am better
to night – What are
your plans about coming
home – Will you be
ready to meet me in
Canandaigua Thursday –
if so let me know –
Will Sarah
Birth: 1820-01-25 Death: 1867-06-10
be ready
Page 2

to make her visit to
Frances
Birth: 1826-12-12 Death: 1909-08-24
next week if
you wait for her a
day or two in Canandaigua?
If not you had better
defer your visit there
and go again –
I would prefer to go
out in the carriage
& then must have
4 days – Leaving here
Thursday I see would
give me but 3 so
if you return home
this week I will
meet you somewhere
in the cars
Page 3

Let me know by
the next mail –
I have letters from
Washington but nothing
new – The papers to-
night say Fred
Birth: 1830-07-08 Death: 1915-04-25
is
in N. York
I write as you see
in much haste
for the early mail
God bless you
my precious child
Mother
Love & compliments
to all
