Washington, April 12 th
My dear Mother,
I fear I shall
not get to Auburn in time to
attend to the labyrinth and
evergreens this Spring, but it
would be a pity to lose a
year in their growth. Cannot
you have somebody plant the
green poles, one in the place of
each stake? The operation will
not require a great deal of
intelligence — consisting only in
putting one stick in the hole another
comes out of. The colored man

who lives in the “Gully lot”, (I
forget his name) I should
think might do it.
After the green sticks are all
placed, a bean or a few morning
glory seeds planted at the foot
of each, about the middle of
May will cover it with vines
this summer. — Will
