My dearest Henry
It is the day
of Prayer and fasting –
our family have all
gone to Church. I
wonder how many
clergy men will this
day set before the
people the one great
sin for which the
soul of the Nation
ought to be afflicted –
for which I doubt not
it is afflicted this
day – I think it
will be with us as
with the Jews of old
the Lord will not
hear us, until we
determine to “undo
the heavy burdens,
& let the oppressed
go free" – “Then
ye may cry & I will
hear you” – saith
