Southern Central Railroad,
Treasurer's Office,
Auburn, N. Y., Dec 1 1868
My dear Father
I have your
kind letter in reference to
family matters at Auburn
I think I now understand
your views in reference to
the expenses here. I will therefore
after to day Dec 1st assume and
pay all the family expenses here.
The curtins for the Drawing Room
I told Jenny
the last time we were in N. Y
and they are purchased at a
cost of about $300 I am
exceedingly sorry now
that they were bought with-
out your approval but I
really feel that Jennys good

tast in such matters can
be trusted and particulary
as for the past two years
my business affairs have
been so pressing as to through
the entire arangement and
care of the house on her
hands. I am more and
more satisfied every year
that her greatest ambition
and aim is to make our home
pleasant for us all and that
she has not a single selfish
or extravigant wish. ^of her own^ I have
handed your letter to her and
she will probably write you
about house matters
I think you have a mistaken
impression about encroaching
upon the principal of your
property. When I took charge
of matters here in 1859 your entire
interest in the various Estates

amounted to $273,000 and
even that was made up
of several items inventoried
much beyond then their each
value. To day your property
including premium on Govt Bonds
amounts to $325,000 or $52,000
more than in 1859 and $42,000
more than in 1865. I do not
wish you to feel that because
of your absence your affairs
are neglected for I assure you
I have always looked as carefully
after them as my own. It is
true I have so much on my hands
that I have in a great measure
to work through others but I think
I have things so systemamatized
that they all work well. I
am however admonished by
exhaustion for care and
anxiety of the past two years
