Middletown, Sept 20: 1862.
My Dear Uncle,
Colonel David P. Dewitt
Birth: 1817-07-10 Death: 1889-02-26
, of the
Third Maryland Volunteers, would gladly be
transferred to a regiment from his own state :
and a petition for his transfer already has been
presented to the War Department.
I write to invoke your kind offices in the matter,
if it be not inconsistent with your own position to
render them.
Colonel Dewitt has proved his loyalty
and his courage in the field. He is now at home, sick,
on a few days furlough, and I doubt not would more
rapidly gain strength under the prospect of leading a
company of New Yorkers to the field.
The fact that his family are parisheners of mine
will excuse, I trust, this note in his behalf.
Very Respectfully & affectionately,
Your nephew,
Augustus Seward,
The Honorable
William H. Seward.
