Biography

"Educator, Author. An 1813 graduate of Union College in Schnectady, New York, he studied medicine before returning to study at Andover Theological Seminary. He dropped out due to a lack of funds and tutored at his alma mater for several years. From 1821 to 1826 he was pastor of the First Baptist Church in Boston before once again returning briefly to his alma mater as Professor of Natural Philosophy. From 1827 to 1855 he was President of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island where he was considered quite progressive for his time. After his tenure as Brown's President he spent a year as the pastor of the First Baptist Church of Providence. He was the author of eighteen books including "Elements of Moral Science", "Elements of Political Economy", "Elements of Intellectual Philosophy", "Thoughts on the Present Collegiate System in the United States", "The Limitations of Human Responsibility" and "Domestic Slavery Considered as a Scriptural Institution". He was involved in a variety of the issues of the day, such as the anti-slavery movement, the temperance movement and educational and prison reforms. Two years after his death his sons Francis and Heman published the two-volume "The Life and Labors of Francis Wayland" about their father. (bio by: Jen Snoots)
