Born in Bavaria, he immigrated to the United States early in his life, and was commissioned as a Colonel of the 103rd New York Volunteer Infantry from 1861-1862 during the Civil War. He left the US after being injured in North Carolina in April 1862. Mentioned in Frances "Fanny" Adeline Seward's 1866 diary.
