Biography

Charles Henry Davis was born in Boston, Massachusetts. In 1824 he was appointed midshipman, but after three years qualified for lieutenancy due to his 2 years at Harvard and his intelligence. He later finished his degree at Harvard and spent his career on scientific works related to the navy. In 1849 he became Superintendent of the Nautical Almanac Office and was promoted to Commander in 1854. In 1856 he was part of the Bureau of Detail in Washington D.C. and helped to plan and organize the South Atlantic Blockade and various other expeditions when the Civil War began. In February 1863 he was promoted to Rear Admiral and also participated in the founding of the National Academy of Sciences. He authored "The Coast Survey of the United States" and "Narrative of the North Pole Expedition of the USS Polaris." He served as Superintendent of the Naval Observatory from 1865 to 1867 and from 1874 until his death in 1877. He was honored with a statue at Vicksburg in 1911.
