GWS encounters Rev. Hooper Cummings in 18250521GWS_WHS1. Geo says: "Where it not for that contempitable, irreligious and hateful vice, his words, his action, his prea- ching, would do good. I was much pleased, for I think he was sober. Mr Barnes says he is the best example of good speaking and Reading in the United States. But I think he is mis- taken, for I do not think he is." At the time, Geo is in New York City. I believe the aforementioned death date from McClintock to be incorrect--it is only reasonable that Geo heard Rev. Cumming speak at the Vandewater-street Church, which means that Rev. Cumming must not have yet left for S.C. Additionally, the Peoples Press Newspaper obituary lists Rev. Cumming's death date as Jan. 7, 1826, allowing him to possibly move to S.C. later than the May 1825 date Geo states he heard the reverend speak. Geo also alludes to a drinking problem; perhaps that was the cause of the Rev.'s move and early death.
