Biography

Prominent American abolitionist, journalist, and social reformer. He is best known as editor and writer of the radical abolitionist newspaper The Liberator, which he founded in 1831 and published until 1865. His newspaper and his writing was well-known throughout the U.S. He continuously fought for the complete and immediate emancipation of slaves. A large number of his subscribers were blacks (likely freed and living in the north). He played a key role in the anti-slavery and abolitionist campaign until the successful emancipation of slaves during the Civil War. He was one of the founders of the American Anti-Slavery Society. In later life he became involved in the women's suffrage movement.
