Simon Cameron

Pennsylvania Republican leader. Served in the U.S. Senate from 1845-49, 1857-61, 1867-77, and replaced James Buchanan after he was elected President. Cameron was a friend and colleague of Buchanan and was a former Democrat with widespread business interests in newspapers, banking and manufacturing, resembling a Whig in political philosophy.
Unsuccessful candidate for the Republican presidential nomination in 1860, but appointed Secretary of War in the Cabinet of President Lincoln from 1861-1862. Due to corruption allegations, removed from this position and then appointed United States Minister to Russia in 1862. After retiring from the Senate in 1877, he traveled extensively in Europe and the West Indies.
