Biography
from encyclopedia britannica: A British politician "murdered by Fenian extremists the day after his arrival in Dublin as chief secretary of Ireland and as a goodwill emissary from England, at the height of the Irish crisis in 1882...[he] entered Parliament in 1865." Cavendish was seen as a future leader of the parliamentary Liberal Party and was the financial secretary to the Treasury from 1880 until 1882. He was a close friend of PM Gladstone and in 1882 was asked to be the chief secretary for Ireland, which was a dangerous job at the time due to political and social unrest. After leaving for Dublin on May 5th, he was killed the next night while walking with Thomas Burke, the permanent undersecretary for Ireland.
