Biography

Son of Comte Etienne Gilbert Eugène de Sartiges and Anna Dodge de Sartiges. 

His father was the Viscount Chrales-Eugène-Gabriel de Sartiges of Sourniac, a member of the nobility of Auvergne, who served in the Royal Navy and was prefect of the Haute-Loire . His mother was Françoise-Félicité de La Roche du Barry Rozet, daughter of an infantry commander.

In 1830 , he was appointed secretary of the French legation in Brazil , then in Greece and Constantinople until 1844 . During his stay in South America , in 1834, he went to Rio de Janeiro via Cape Horn to travel the Peru , rediscovered the Inca ruins of Choquequirao (which descrebió in the Revue des deux mondes ) in Cusco , where he met in full Civil War with Pancha Gamarra , reckless wife of deposed president Agustín Gamarra , which would write.

In 1835 , being in Arequipa , where he met another French Flora Tristan , went to Lima , being assaulted in the course, along with English consul Lord Edward Clinton and Colonel Wilson, by the famous bandit Leon Escobar , losing even the clothes. From his stay in Latin America Voyage dans les Républiques de l'Amérique du sud (Travel in the republics of South America) under the pseudonym ES Lavandais wrote.

In 1844 , he was appointed charge d'affaires in Persia (Iran), a position he held until 1849. In 1851, he was appointed Minister Plenipotentiary to the United States, signing, in 1859, the Jerez-Sartiges Treaty with the Nicaraguan Minister Máximo Jerez . In 1852, he married in Washington DC , with Anna Thorndike, with whom he had three children.

After leaving the United States in 1859, he went to Europe as ambassador to King William III of the Netherlands (1859), then to King Victor Emmanuel II of Italy (1862) and, finally, to Pope Pius IX in Holy See (1864-1868), replacing Prince Henri de La Tour d'Auvergne-Lauranguais .

He was elected senator of the French Empire in August 1868 and was named Officer of the Legion of Honor . He died in Paris in 1892.
