Biography

Senator from 1857-1869. James Dixon was a Representative and a Senator from Connecticut. He was born in Enfield, Hartford County, CT. Dixon took preparatory studies and graduated from Williams College in 1834. He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1834. He practiced law in Enfield, CT. From 1837-1838, and in 1844 he was a member of the State house of representatives, and served as speaker in 1837. In 1839 Dixon moved to Hartford, CT and continued to practice of law. From March 4, 1845-March 3, 1849 he served as a Whig member of the  Twenty-ninth and Thirtieth Congresses. In 1854 he was a member of the State house of representatives and declined the nomination for Governor of Connecticut. That same year he was an unsuccessful candidate for United States Senator. However, in 1856 he was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate and was reelected in 1863, serving from March 4, 1857 to March 3, 1869. He also held the posts of chairman of the Committee to Audit and Control the Contingent Expenses (Thirty-seventh and Thirty-eighth Congresses), the Committee on District of Columbia (Thirty-eighth and Thirty-ninth Congresses), and the Committee on Post Office and Post Roads (Thirty-ninth Congress). In 1868 he was an unsuccessful Democratic candidate for the United States Senate and the House of Representatives. The next year he was appointed Minister to Russia, but declined it and spent his time reading, writing, and traveling until his death Hartford, CT.
