Biography
US Congressman. He studied law and was admitted to the bar in Massachusetts. He also engaged in manufacturing. He served in the Massachusetts State senate in 1848 and 1849. In 1851, he was elected as a Whig to the 32nd and 33rd Congresses, serving until 1855. He was also a member of the Peace Convention of 1861 held in Washington, D.C., in an effort to devise means to prevent the impending Civil War. He was elected as a Republic to be Lieutenant Governor in 1860 and served until his resignation on March 29 1861. He was then appointed collector of customs in Boston from 1861-1865.
