Biography

Auburn local. Moved with his family from Nashua, NH to Auburn, NY in 1839. He became an expert mechanic, particularly for trains. In August 1850, he was appointed "Superintendent of motive power" of the Rome and Watertown Railroad, so he moved to Rome, NY and remained there for about six years. In Feb 1856 he moved to Toronto, Canada to take charge as General Superintendent of the Northern Railway of Canada. He remained there until 1868, after which he returned to Auburn, intending to lead a rural life. However, he then became the Superintendent of the Buffalo & Erie Railroad, but he resigned shortly after to assume the General Superintendency of the Merchants' Union Express Company. He also served as the President of the Southern Central Railroad. His next and last railroad experience was as Superintendent of the Cayuga Lake Shore Road. He was at the time of his death, and for some time previously had been, Superintendent of the Auburn Water Works Company.
