Biography

Though he was born in Indiana, Hay spent most of his young life in Warsaw, Illinois. Hay went on to study at Springfield College and Brown University. While at Brown he excelled at poetry, before returning home to study law. After forming close relationships with both John Nicolay and Abraham Lincoln, Hay was offered the position of private secretary to the president. He served in that position from 1861 to 1865.
