Biography
Owner of Barnum's City Hotel in Baltimore, MD. Frequently noted as one of the best, if not the best, hotels in early American cities. Barnum's Hotel hosted many notable guests throughout its history, including Confederate spy Belle Boyd, John Wilkes Booth, and some of the Harper’s Ferry conspirators. Barnum’s was Charles Dickens’ favorite American hotel. When Barnum died, hotels along Broadway in NYC lowered their flags to half mast in honor of his success in the hotel world. FMS and WHS stayed at his hotel in 1835. FMS gave it high praise and called it the "best house [hotel] I ever saw"
