Her sister, Elizabeth Lord Cogswell, was married to Senator James Dixon of Connecticut. After the death of President Lincoln, Mary Kinney stayed with Mary Todd Lincoln.
The New York Herald's obituary says, "She was a well known and highly esteemed lady... Mrs. Kinney was educated in New York, where she has ever since chiefly lived, but passed the last sixteen winters in Washington, occupying a prominent position in the best society of both cities. She was a Christian lady, alike beautiful in mind and person and was characterized by great benevolence. Her funeral was attended by a large assemblage of the most distinguished people of Washington"
