Biography

James Kelly was born in New York circa 1812, where he was a baker in his early life. He served as alderman in the City of New York from 1846-1852. In 1856 he served as delegate to the Republican National Convention from New York, and was the New York Republican State Chair from 1858-1860. He was appointed postmaster of New York City by President Abraham Lincoln in 1864, a position he held until 1869.
He declines FMS's invitation to dinner on March 26, 1840.
