Biography

In April 1861, Ellis enlisted in the Union Army, joining the 71st New York State Militia. On May, 3 1861, Ellis was promoted to Captain of Company I. On July 1, Ellis was promoted again to command the 124th New York volunteer infantry regiment in Orange County, NY. Most significantly, the 124th fought at the Battle of Fredericksburg and the Battle of Chancellorsville where the regiment was given the nickname "Orange Blossoms." The 124th New York regiment also fought at the Battle of Gettysburg where Ellis was shot and killed.
