Biography

David Porter DeWitt was a Brevet Brigadier General for the Union in the Civil War. He was born in Hoboken, NJ and entered the US Military Academy at West Point in June of 1832, graduating in 1836 as 14th in his class. He then received a commission as a second lieutenant. He resigned his commission and began working for the New York, Lake Erie, and Western Railroad. DeWitt later became a civil engineer and helped to construct railroads in Canada, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and KY. He joined the United States Express company in 1859, but resigned in 1861 to enter the US Army due to the outbreak of the Civil War. He was initially Major of the 2nd Maryland Volunteers and became Colonel of the Third Regiment Maryland Volunteers. In the campaign of 1862 he served under General Nathaniel Banks and fought in the Battle of Antietam on September 17, 1862. He was given the title of Brevet Brigadier General of Volunteers for faithful and meritorious service in 1865 and, on retirement, re-joined the United States Express Company.
