Biography

Philip Barton Key was the son of Francis Scott Key, who wrote the lyrics for "The Star Spangled Banner." Philip Barton Key was the district attorney for Washington in the 1850s. In 1858 he began an affair with Teresa Sickles, wife of New York Congressman Daniel Edgar Sickles. On February 27, 1859, Sickles confronted Key about the affair, and shot him dead.
