Biography

Politician from Vermont. He served in the Revolutionary War and graduated from Harvard College in 1781. He studied law and was admitted to the bar shortly after. His law practice began in Windsor, VT, where he also ran a farm. He also began a settlement at Williamstown. He established a cloth factory and a saw and grist mill. He was secretary of the State constitutional convention in 1786 and a member of the State house of representatives from 1787-1790. He was judge of the State supreme court from 1791-1795. He was then elected to U.S. Senate in 1794. He was reelected as a Federalist in 1800 and served until he resigned in 1801. He was then the U.S. Judge of the district of Vermont from 1801 until his death.
