Biography
Knowles, a major of the 21st Pennsylvania Regiment, was promoted to colonel in October 1864, and his forces were upgraded to cavalry and attached to the cavalry forces of the Army of the Potomac, of which Seward was then colonel. Died at 25. There is no mention of him ever marrying. Is likely not the "Captain Knowles" referred to by Will in his letters, as Captain Knowles had a wife.
